With a central location and a quirky name that more than hints at celebrity status, Vi Ai Pi is a favourite Legian nightlife institution on Bali’s most popular one-way street. Located right beside the memorial, with brightly coloured surf shops beneath, Vi Ai Pi is hard to miss on your way down Jalan Legian. It occupies the second and third levels of a block, and is a quick hop up a main entrance between two shops. You’ll first stumble upon the bar, featuring cool blue LED lighting in acrylic circles and bordered by tall stools. Surrounding the bar is a spacious layout with black interiors and four different areas to dine in; one near the bar, two near the stage, and another at the back, near another staircase that leads to the roomy upper club.
The main entrance is right under the stage where the live performances take place, making you the brief centre of attention as you pop into Vi Ai Pi. Staff members are friendly and helpful. There are some laid-back lounging options near the stage, which also offer street views over Jalan Legian and the memorial. The menu presents Western, Italian and Asian selections, from simple nibbles to big lunches and dinners to enjoy before partying away at the club upstairs.
For starters, there’s the tasty Vi Ai Pi chicken roulade, rolled up in the frying pan and served with a special sweet and sour sauce. One of the most popular dishes, the crispy Peking duck, is among the Asian mains. This succulent and tender treat comes with its crispy skin glazed with sweet oyster sauce and served with steamed rice, bok choy salads and hoisin sauce. From the Western selections is the Aussie grilled tenderloin steak, seasoned and served on a bed of potato with grilled mushrooms, green salad and pepper sauce. For dessert, try the Bali banana split, a twist on the old favourite, featuring banana slices fried in thin batter.
Chilean and local wines to match your dish, premium brandy and cognac, champagne and sparkling wine for special occasions, as well as various international and local beers are available on the drinks list. Evenings feature two-for-one cocktails from six to midnight, there are flaming cocktails and even ‘cocktail jugs’, perfect for those wilder celebrations.
Vi Ai Pi club takes on different themes each day, seven days a week, promising a unique and fun experience. You can also arrange for your own space or table setup to gather with a circle of friends. The entertainment roundup consists of regular live bands nightly from 21:00 – 01:00 on the restaurant’s stage, performing top 40s, pop, rock and requests. Weekends feature fashion shows as well as exotic dancers, and dazzling drag queens lip-synching to remixed ABBA and Psy, interspersed with some unexpected and often hilarious slapstick. A resident DJ then takes on the scene from midnight and into the wee hours upstairs at the Vi Ai Pi Club, with a spacious dance floor that fits a thousand.
