Café Batujimbar was established in the early 90s and had undergone significant layout changes throughout the years.Referred to among diners in Sanur as simply ‘BJ’, Batujimbar’s history is closely related to the early Sanur-based ceramic cottage industry that has now grown into the large enterprise known as Jenggala Ceramics.
Cafe Batujimbar use to be the site where the Jenggala ceramics enterprise began, before its move to the current major showroom and manufacturing site in Jimbaran.
Owned by Ade Wawo-Runtu, daughter of the late Wija Wawo-Runtu who was among the early pioneers of Bali’s tourism and founder of the legendary Tandjung Sari Hotel in Sanur, Cafe Batu Jimbar appeals to all generations.
Cafe Batujimbar is located at the epicentre of Sanur’s dining scene. With shady trees, parasols, a cobbled terrace, and occasional live music after noon, this Sanur’s favourite alfresco venue is never out of date.
Cafe Batujimbar’s menu comprises culinary choices of local and international selections. The cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfasts feature a blend of traditional Indonesian that serves international palates well, especially for those who are visiting the island for the experience.
Such local breakfast delights include the bubur ayam chicken porridge and bubur Manado or Manadonese-style congee every Sunday morning. Coconut milk-infused steamed rice called nasi uduk and lontong sayur or boiled rice packets with fresh vegetables are among the choices every Saturday morning.
The Western lunch menu includes the minted leek and pea soup for starters, then the turkey breast sandwich, which makes an excellent main course. Indonesian lunch selections include an even more complete lontong dish ala ‘BJ’. Neat presentations meet authentic sauces and homecooking blends at Batujimbar.
A not so complicated menu featuring tastes from Indonesia, Bali, some Asian and Continental, provides a culinary journey for the taste buds. The cosy and shady ambiance makes dining at ease in this part of Sanur during any time of the day.
A simple stopover for a light bite or pastries and desserts, and coffees and teas with a good read, is a regular option. Kids will also love the ‘JBay’ homemade ice cream brand by the scoop from the ice cream bar, or the mango pie a la mode.
Good to Know about Cafe Batujimbar
The Pantry, a gourmet shop just to the right of the cafe, can be found as an adjoining highlight where diners can step in to shop for quality imports and fresh goods. Some Sanur residents source for their usually hard-to-get imports here daily.
The cafe is even more alive during dinner time when foodies and families flock the venue. Candlelit tables add to the soothing dining nuance along with live music. Desserts are a special treat at Btujimbar, as patrons may select their own choices of cakes and delicacies from their large cake displays.
The famous Sunday organic market features fresh suppliers from all over the island gather to present their wares at the cafes foyer. Arugula, carrots, cucumbers, beans, eggplant, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, sweet corn, and homemade sauces and jams can all be found here.
The open-air styled Sunday market has gathered much hype throughout the years and has become a highlight along the Sanur strip.
