Topeng Restaurant in Bali
Surrounded by ornamental bamboo cages and traditional topeng masks, the modern, warmly lit interior comprises a round central table and four square tables with cushioned rattan chairs. Dark reflective tiles and a whole wall full of mirrors provide a sense of space to this somewhat small interior. On the opposite side are full floor-to-ceiling windows showing an outside patio lined with several more tables. Three table setups under towering, conical thatched roofs dot a green lawn.
Beyond the unusual design, diners will find a menu with fresh seafood ingredients sourced locally from Jimbaran Bay just down the road, and vegetables supplied from the cool farms of Bedugul in central Bali, Topeng offers fresh and tasty international selections with local twists. On top of that, the restaurant also boasts a great list of world-class wines and cheeses.
Start off with its ‘delice of seafood’ that offers an appetizing assortment of smoked salmon, scallops, prawn with black olive and fruit salsa, seafood cocktail aioli and red caviar. The fragrant duck consommé, comprising braised Balinese duck, shiitake mushrooms and topped with shredded quail omelette and spring onions, make for a delicious prelude before the mains.
Meat lovers will love the beef tenderloin duo, which features a black pepper sauced half and another with Sumatra’s world-famous beef rendang paste. This combination brings a unique ‘East-meets-West’ experience on a plate, and is a must-try for visitors who want the best of both worlds in a single serving. Sweet potato mash with pineapple and raisin yellow rice complements the treat as wonderfully tasty side dishes.
The bar and lounge serves cocktails, specialty coffees and an extensive wine list available by the glass. Desserts top off the evening, and are mostly prepared from the specialty chocolate café’s cold kitchen next door. Topeng Restaurant is a great addition to the Jimbaran dining scene, so if you’ve tried out an evening at one of the iconic Jimbaran seafood cafes, you can opt for this fine contemporary alternative on your next.
