Three Monkeys Sanur
The cafe is a stroll along the quiet sidewalks from most of the hotels along the Jalan Danau Tamblingan. With a stylish layout and many seating options, Three Monkeys welcomes its guests to its traditional Balinese-inspired architecture housing its three main dining sections.Plush sofas under a shady terrace and under the shades of white parasols and frangipani overlook the sidewalk. An upper level with air-conditioned indoor dining is an alternative option.
The upper level dining room is surrounded by glass, providing guests enjoying their meals or chin-wags a generous sense of space. Six dining tables and abstract art works line the walls. Outside on the same level, a front foyer and more on the side provide further seating options and views.
The contemporary menu features modern Indonesian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean delights. Open up the white menu folder, and you’ll find yourself browsing through lots of choices, from grazing, pide (Turkish flatbread), Italian pasta and a wide variety of mains to choose from.
You’ll find creative crossovers of both cuisine and presentation here, such as the Bali-style ‘ayam sisit’ pizza, or a dark red sambal dip that comes served with an assortment of Indonesian ‘krupuk’ crackers in a small basket. The sambal here is a reduced version in ‘hot n’ spiciness’ compared to the notorious local preparation. Safe, and absolutely enjoyable for the international palate – and stomach!
The drinks menu is also extensive, from homemade soda mixes, shakes and icy blends, to granitas, lattes and an array of alcoholic beverages. A decent wine list with Australian, New Zealand, and Argentinean wines is also present.
Three Monkeys uses fresh organic produce in its cuisine, and its organic garden salad comes served with mixed leaves, broccoli, corn, beets, cherry tomatoes, dried tomatoes and red wine dressing. The shrimp rolls come with four on top of salads and a pleasant small bowl of dipping sauce.
The cuisine is as aesthetically inspired as the restaurant’s structural design. Bamboo and thatch work are apparent throughout the architecture, and a cool water feature separates the front parasol and tree-shaded terrace with the interior dining section. Tear-drop lamps hang down from the high and open ceiling, and mauve curtains drape the walls while letting in ample natural daylight at the same time.
Three Monkeys delivers top-notch service through its Balinese team, well-trained, professional and polite. Not overly attentive as you would encounter at some other restaurants on the same strip, yet swift with requests. Good service, innovative cuisine and cosy seating in ample choices make Three Monkeys Sanur a fresh addition in the area and worth trying out.
