Pirates Bay Bali
Since its opening in 2012, this addition to Nusa Dua’s dining scene has drawn families seeking something different and fun. The Bay’s centrepiece is its pirate ship – a salvaged wooden boat that was reconstructed and decorated, complete with sails and blackjacks, and which resembles a stranded one in this case. Here, kids will love the flying fox, rope walks, and swinging bridges. Come alone, you’ll find calming spaces in open tents or hanging chairs where you can enjoy a good read or simply relax and enjoy the great peninsular views. After sunset (replaced by gorgeous crimson skies on this eastern side of the island), beach torches are lit and candlelit dinners pave the way for perfect romantic evenings.
The main highlight here for families is its day outing packages. You can opt to have fun as a family, a couple, or simply leave it to the kids. They can don pirate costumes, available for rent, to get into the mood and search for loot, camp, make and fly kites, cook and more. Nothing beats the childhood thrill of dressing up with an eye patch and headscarf, then discovering a wooden ‘treasure chest’ filled with golden coins in a real, open-air beach setting. Caldera, the management team behind the concept, provides corporate team-building options with various scenarios, from treasure hunts and amazing races to motivational speaker sessions and music activities.
Pirates Bay is great for seafood lovers, serving lunch and dinner in extraordinary settings and with wonderful views. The Pirates Basket is good to start off with, served as a seafood basket of grilled baby lobster, crabs, calamari, snapper and prawns. The rest of the menu is a mix of Asian and European favourites, from wholesome burgers and club sandwiches with fresh salad and French fries, to ‘from the wok’ selections and the ubiquitous seafood nasi goreng Indonesian favourite. Desserts the whole family will enjoy include Indonesian banana fried fritters in crepes topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. To wash them down, there’s a full list of healthy tropical fruit juices and cold beer for dad.
