Tacos, Tequilas and Fiestas in Seminyak
Motel Mexicola is a colourful and quirky Mexican bar and restaurant down Jalan Kayujati. It’s just a minutes’ walk from La Lucciola and Petitenget temple, and a stone’s throw from Sense Hotel Seminyak. Visitors from Sydney may be familiar with this partnership between The Bucket List and Rojo Rocket, who serve a range of tostadas, tacos and ceviche created by Veracruzian Chef Alejandro Urbina.
The tasty morsels and modern takes on traditional Mexican fare are accompanied by a drinks list featuring tequilas, margaritas and Cuba libres, that can be enjoyed al fresco. In addition, Mexicola hosts regular house parties with live Latin music that will transport you ‘south of the border’.
The first things to catch your eye at Motel Mexicola are criss-crosses of small red, yellow, green and blue flags strung across the street from Mexicola to the Bodyworks Spa opposite. Further splashes of colours cover its front entrance, with ‘Taqueria, Rockin’ Maria’ written above a counter that serves Mexican drinks, tacos and fajitas. This street side cantina is an early night treat for those hooking up with friends before going inside the main building to party.
Stepping through its small arched entrance hall, you’ll encounter a table filled with bright orange and yellow marigolds against a blue painted wall. This peculiar sight, referred to as the ‘Motel Mexicola shrine’, also features Latin curios and retro-style photographs surrounded by thick candles with melting wax left to flow down the table’s sides.
To the left of the shrine is a central courtyard, with perimeters lined with bars, bars and more bars serving shots and beer. Another peculiar sight within the courtyard is a rectangular concrete ‘gravesite’ with a visible cross on it. On our night out there, Sexy Jose Cuervo promotion girls and Carmen Miranda-style fruity beauties added to the Latin-style party atmosphere. Fire dancers boogied and juggled to the beat of the Latin band, and the place was packed.
Motel Mexicola also features a more laid-back upstairs where you can take a cosy seat, sit back, relax and enjoy the view down to the ravers in the courtyard below and it is where you’ll find a similar but smaller shrine too! If you’re feeling a little peckish, you can order tacos, tostadas, aguachile, quesadillas and other antojitos (tapas), before heading down again for more partying. It’s one of the latest and best places to enjoy a good night in Seminyak, with simple and affordable Mexican food, and great drinks and atmosphere.
