La Sal Spanish Food & Lounge
La Sal is one of Bali’s most popular Spanish restaurants, located deep in the hidden corners of Seminyak on quiet Jalan Drupadi II. Although it can be rather hard to find, its cosy alfresco settings with an upstairs terrace, and an eclectic menu and wide range of authentic dishes make it a sought-after spot for lovers of tapas and Spanish cuisine. La Sal’s unique and cosy layout comprises whitewashed wooden beams and there’s a gorgeous garden with a small bridge and stream. Barbecues are prepared in a corner, and you can even have one right at your table.A Seminyak institution since 2005, La Sal delivers a great selection of Spanish cooking with an Argentinean twist, created by Executive Chef Lino de Zordo who hails from Buenos Aires. Choose a spot on the airy upper terrace or unwind in a white wicker chair under the open-beam ceiling and glimmering chandelier downstairs. Start with the tapas, hot or cold or even a mixture of both. Must-tries include vegetables and goat’s cheese bruschetta and ‘sailor’s style’ clam casserole. Seafood lovers will love the prawns served on hot plates with well-seasoned garlic and truffle oil, and the deep-fried squid with black and white aioli.La Sal has several unusual salads; the Ensalada ‘La Sal’ is a homemade style salad with olives and quail eggs in balsamic vinaigrette, while the ensalada tibia con queso de cabra comprises warm goat cheese with honey and walnut vinaigrette. Tempting main courses include the crispy pork belly with casserole lentils and chilled mango, a very juicy and sweet treat. The paella de mariscos del marinero, another ‘sailor’s style’ seafood choice is a classic Valencia saffron rice dish that comes with olive oil-marinated fish, prawn, shrimp, squid and mussels. Closing treats include some hard to resist desserts such as La Sal’s Argentinean toffee pancake and chocolate mousse tart.
To wash all of this down, there’s a great selection of Spanish and Chilean wines, and sangrias, that go so well with the tunes of Latin, salsa and tango fed through the cleverly placed sound system. Try their own take on the famous matador cocktail, which is a blend of Bulldog gin, tequila and Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge, together with grenadine syrup, orange, lime and raspberry juice. With cocktail in hand, you can head up to the romantic, subtly lit chill-out terrace. Some evenings feature garden barbecue nights for a much livelier Mediterranean dining scene.
