La Finca
La Finca is one of the most unique Spanish restaurants to grace the Seminyak dining scene. While many restaurants on the island have taken on a rustic Ibiza and Mediterranean theme, La Finca wins hands down with its combination of tasty and wholesome dishes prepared using fresh organic ingredients and traditional methods, served in cosy and casual settings of an airy bamboo dining hall and leafy gardens. Despite its rather far-flung location on the northernmost end of Batubelig, it has fast gained recognition since its opening in mid 2013 with a steady flow of patrons that comprise Canggu expatriates and repeat island visitors.Getting to La Finca is an escape west from the busier haunts of Seminyak, onto the quieter Jalan Batubelig and past the other popular dining spots that line the route, such as Bow Restaurant and Lounge and the Naughty Nuri’s Warung. After an easy 15-minute ride, a right turn at the junction at the end of Jalan Batubelig takes you to the restaurant, with its white walls and clear, stylized signage above a Spanish arched doorway.Inside, before the impressive bamboo dining hall is a cosy shaded courtyard dotted with whitewashed wooden setups that make for great afternoon cocktails with family or friends. Ornamental silver dragonflies and miniature birdhouses hang from the trees gently swaying in the breeze. Full-sized decorative wooden cart wheels around the courtyard add to the rural Mediterranean theme and in between the giant bamboo columns of the main structure are tables set with Spanish decorative ceramic plates, while smaller tables and chairs dot the bordering lawn.
Tapas are a great intro, comprising a rich assortment from bite-size Spanish omelette ‘pintxos de tortilla Espanola’ and ‘pintxos de iberico’ sausages or ham from acorn-fed black Iberian pig, to sharing plates such as truffle garlic prawns, grilled squid with garlic parsley oil, or ‘pan con tomate’ toasted bread topped with fresh crushed tomatoes, garlic and olive oil. Salads come in generous portions, especially the arugula. One of our instant favourites was a rocket salad mix with grilled beets, avocado, caramelized almonds, feta and its delish olive oil-balsamic-honey-mustard dressing. You can experience Spanish tapas, hearty salads, burgers and noodles, each under the IDR 100,000 mark.
At the far northern end is La Finca’s grill house where Spanish chorizos, sausages and seafood are prepared, and at the far opposite of the courtyard is a bar in the style of a wooden hut with a curved solid wood bar top. Skilled bartenders whip up some great, refreshing house cocktails; muddling and juicing fresh ingredients into their cool concoctions, such as La Finca hermosa – pineapple, strawberries, apple and mint with vodka and a squeeze of lime. Their gorgeous sangrias are also worth the journey to this far end of Batubelig; you’ll relish in this fulsome punch of fresh fruit slices, with a mild brandy, triple sec and rose wine blend.
