Surfer’s Haven on Bali’s Eastern Coast
Komune Beach Club is a perfect venue for those who enjoy the beach lifestyle. Keramas has long been a favorite surf spot and this addition provides an excellent venue for wave riders from around the world to hang, chill and recharge. A half-hour drive from Denpasar, Komune sits right in front of one of Bali’s best high-performance right hand reef breaks. Here you can paddle out and ride the waves, then head in for healthy bites and refreshing drinks under the shelter of a uniquely designed restaurant and bar.
Getting to Komune from the main areas such as Denpasar and Sanur, head east along the Ida Bagus Mantra bypass and take a U-turn at the traffic lights before the Bali Safari & Marine Park. A small but well paved road leads you to Komune after a one-kilometre drive. The resort lobby features unusual architecture comprising a slanting roof with solar panels on top of a unique array of sparsely tied bamboo lengths that make it look like a gigantic tatami mat. Through the lobby, the beach club is at the end of a pathway highlighted with green organic gardens and filled with tropical fruits and herbs. You will also pass the resort’s traditional Javanese style Joglo wooden house that forms part of the resort’s distinctive facilities.
A bridge with a surfboard-shaped sign leads you to the beach club, where you’ll soon see Nusa Penida Island on the far horizon and the waves. Before the wide ocean views is the main restaurant and bar, a circular structure that looks a bit like a giant mushroom, dappled with black canvas awnings and with green beach facing sofas on wooden decks. The spacious green lawns surround an amazing 20x10m aquamarine infinity pool that also takes a circular form. You can kick back and listen to tunes, surf the net via free Wi-Fi, and enjoy a good read or a soothing massage on one of the daybeds under wide parasols. The daybeds surround the pool on an open-tiered timber decking.
There’s a selection of hearty all-day snacks and meals on the menu, made up of fresh locally sourced produce and also harvested from the club’s own organic garden. The menu also features international and traditional Balinese dishes created by Komune’s homegrown chef, Agus Asther. The beach club’s beef burger is a quick treat that consists of a plump patty plus bacon, lettuce, cheddar cheese, onion, tomato and coleslaw between thick homemade buns. There are also selections of pastas and pizzas, and a grill menu with Keramas chicken as a highlight, char-grilled on a bed of Japanese soba noodles and sautéed bokchoy leaves. A ‘grommets’ menu for kids includes downsized favourites, such as grilled ‘fish n’ chips’ and lean fillet steaks.
Evenings feature sunset sessions with chill out music around the pool deck, while regular movie screenings are held on its neat open-air ‘lawn cinema’ west of the bar. Earlier, happy hours from Monday to Friday offer 50% discount off drinks from 17:00 to 18:00, when beachside fire pits are also set ablaze. Depending on tide forecasts, Komune hosts special night surfing events, with the rolling surf lit up by towering soccer stadium-grade floodlights. An inaugural event in March 2013 featured Bruce Irons thrashing the foam with aerials over Keramas’ inky waves.
