Chiringuito El Kabron
You’ll immediately notice the Mediterranean style from its front shack-like building and entrance, all white and rustic with thatched roofs and wooden cart wheels for windows. A slightly arched doorway leads you into the ocean-facing courtyard where blue beanbags dot real beach sand that is spread around the white stone pool. The result is a surreal ‘floating’ seaside scene with Ibiza style vibes and chill-out beats. Music is channelled from playlists, while regular live bands and guest DJs also frequent the scene.
Chiringuito El Kabron’s menu presents authentic and traditional Spanish and Mediterranean crafted by Executive Chef Marc Torices Guardia who brings to the venue years of experience from stints that include Barcelona’s Sant Pau Restaurant, one of Spain’s Michelin Star restaurants. From a semi-open kitchen Chef Marc Torices cooks up traditional Spanish tapas. These include among others, his own ‘las anchoas’ Mediterranean anchovies and sweet onion, ‘las bravas del kabron’ or Spanish fries with mayonnaise and spicy sauce, ‘pulpo a la gallega’ sliced octopus with smoked paprika and olive oil drizzled potatoes, and the ‘gambas al ajillo’ prawns cooked in spicy and garlic flavoured olive oil sauce.
El Kabron’s paellas are signature dishes to share, which consist of seafood or meat pan-fried with rice infused in saffron and the Spanish base sauce of ‘sofrito’ – garlic, onions, peppers and tomatoes cooked in olive oil. The paellas serve a minimum of two and requires half an hour to prepare. The ‘paella de mariscos’ is a traditional Mediterranean seafood choice, while the ‘arroz negro’ seafood selection comes as a serving of black rice that is oven-cooked with squid ink and served with shrimp and baked cuttlefish. The ‘paella de pollo con setas’ comes with chicken, mushroom and vegetables. There’s also a wood-fired section for barbeques and grills.
As word of its fantastic setting and views has come out over time, reservations are a must, and you can expect long parking rows along the dirt road during the weekends. The crowd is a mix of locals, expats and tourists, and taxis will easily take you to and from the peninsula area. You can come for brunch or lunch, and stay for the whole afternoon to catch the sunsets. Kids are welcome to play and swim while the parents sink down into the blue beanbags with a signature, light green ‘sex on the cliff’ secret-recipe cocktail, a refreshing jug of homemade sangria, or a cool highball of mojito at hand.
